On 24 April, Russian Prime Minister and president-elect Vladimir Putin, who will be inaugurated on 7 May, said he is stepping down as chairman of the ruling United Russia party. Putin proposed outgoing President Dmitry Medvedev as its new leader instead.
Russian President Vladimir Putin could resign his post of the President of the United Russia party following his meeting with core activists of the party. It is speculated that Putin will be replaced as the party chairman by his protege and future Prime Minister, Dmitry Medvedev.
