The cohabitation seems to be the most likely outcome of Serbian elections, after pro-European parties managed to secure majority in the parliament and ostensibly reached an agreement on forming a government, and a populist candidate won the presidency.

'Your first EURES job' is the new project launched by the European Commission to help young people find a job in another EU country.

It's expected that, in its initial phase, the program will improve cross-border mobility for 5,000 people. At this moment, more than 5.5 million young Europeans are looking for a job.

It will also serve as a testing ground for transforming EURES - the network of Member States' employment services – towards a pan-European employment service.

Newly-elected Serbian president, Tomislav Nikolić, announced in his victory speech that Serbia will continue its progress towards the EU.

The leader of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), Tomislav Nikolić, was elected president of Serbia on 20 May, managing to capitalise on the complacency of his counterpart's supporters and accomplishing a major upset.

According to nearly-completed official counts, Nikolić won 49.51% of votes, while the incumbent president and leader of the centre-left Democratic Party (DS), Boris Tadić, got 47.35%.

Nikolić announced in his victory speech that Serbia will continue its progress towards the EU.

Pakistan has restored access to Twitter after blocking the website over "blasphemous" posts about a Facebook competition involving caricatures of the Prophet Muhammed.

The site was blocked on Sunday as a consequence of the contest held in 2010 asking people to draw images of the Prophet Muhammad, and a corresponding Facebook page attempting to make May 20 “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day.”

China and Kyrgyzstan are keen to foster co-operation. Kyrgyzstan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Ruslan Kazakbayev recently paid a visit to China to attend the meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Foreign Ministers Council. He met with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.

Fortunately Greece is the only Eurozone member that faces existential problems to stay or leave the euro area. Ireland and Portugal got last week the seal of 'good direction' by both the Ecofin and the Eurogroup. The two are meeting the programme targets to cut down deficits.

As for Madrid, the Rajoy government got the approval of Brussels for its bank recapitalisation plan. Last but not least Holland even without a government manage to put together a parliamentary agreement to cut down fiscal deficits.   But lets take one thing at a time.

Last week, on Europe Day, when the eurocrats and the hangers on mark the glory of our eternal, precious union, Herman Van Rompuy announced that the financial crisis was essentially over and everyone would be back in growth by the end of the year.

I said at the time that history has not been kind to European leaders who say ‘it’ll all be over by Christmas’. It only took a few days for history to slap the Council President in the face, although there is no sign that reality has in any way impacted on our Chief Monk.

Last Thursday, the new Greek Parliament issued by the elections of 6 May gathered for its inaugural session. Usually, such gatherings are cheerful  and full of hope; but this one wasn’t.

Quite the contrary: a strange mood was in the air, partly due to the fact that this would be the shortest parliamentary season of all times—one day. In fact, the following day the parliament was dissolved and new elections were set.

Two US troops were killed on May 18, when rockets crashed into a U.S. base and a house in the Nari district of Kunar province. Later,NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed the deaths of the two NATO soldiers.
 
According to officials, six other NATO soldiers were slightly wounded,while in another attack in the Watapoor district of Kunar,  three people were killed, two women, a child  and six other civilians were wounded.

As Greece gets close to the June 17 election, the scenery gets quite clear and the prospects get easier to foresee. Greece is not an island, and thus its Eurozone future, at this very time, is determining for the future of the Eurozone itself and consequently the future of the European Union in its present format.

‘France will continue supporting Bulgaria towards accession to Schengen’ stated Simon Suture, chairman of the committee on European affairs of the French Senate.

‘France will continue supporting Bulgaria towards accession to Schengen’ stated Simon Suture, chairman of the committee on European affairs of the French Senate.

Suture was on an official visit to Bulgaria on 18 May. He also said that ‘it was necessary that the assistance of the Cohesion funds of the Union remains unchanged and does not decrease’. In addition, Suture mentioned that a more accurate balance in the allocation of funds across regions was needed.

Malawi President Joyce Banda has announced that the African state will decriminalise homosexuality.

Two years ago, a couple of Malawian men were sentenced to 14 years in prison for announcing they were getting married. It is still a common practice in many countries of the continent that homosexuality is being treated as a crime.
