Wallström urges resolution to 2009 Guinea atrocities

UN Secretary-General Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict Margot Wallström called for assistance for survivors of the atrocities, including mass rapes, that were perpetrated against peaceful protesters in Guinea-Conakry by security forces, and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Wallström visited Guinea to meet with survivors, representatives of victims associations and government officials, including from the ministries of justice, foreign affairs, defence, social affairs and the promotion of women and children.

“I welcome the Joint Communiqué between the government of Guinea and the United Nations, clearly stating the government's commitment to fight impunity and ultimately prevent sexual violence,” Wallström said adding that “the atrocities that occurred on 28 September 2009 must never be forgotten and never be repeated”.

Wallström emphassied that justice in Guinea has been delayed “but it cannot be denied” and pledged to monitor the situation in Guinea-Conakry.
