Russian gas monopoly Gazprom's exports to Europe fell 12% in the first four months of 2012. Sales from January to April dropped from 58bn cubic metres last year to 51bn cubic metres this year.

Europe, which relies on Russia for about 25% of its gas, bought less fuel because of warmer-than-usual weather at the start of the year. Moreover, an expected rise in prices at the beginning of last year caused Gazprom customers to stock up ahead of the increase and then switch to other suppliers.
