The Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party scored a major victory in parliamentary by-elections in Burma (Myanmar) on 1 April; the NLD won 40 of the 45 seats which were in contention, including Suu Kyi's.
Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, the national parliament, was established in 2008 by the constitution and the first elections took place in November 2010. Seats which were up for grab in these by-elections represent some 10% of the total number of deputies in the lower house.
