BERLIN – There can be little reasonable doubt today that the People’s Republic of China will dominate the world of the twenty-first century. The country’s rapid economic growth, strategic potential, huge internal market, and enormous investment in infrastructure, education, and research and development, as well as its massive military buildup, will see to that.

The country’s rapid economic growth, strategic potential, huge internal market, and enormous investment in infrastructure, education, and research and development, as well as its massive military buildup, will see to that. This means that, in political and economic terms, we are entering an East and Southeast Asian century.

FTA reveals inconsistency in approach to human rights.

EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht and the Vietnamese Minister for Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang have concluded, in the margins of the 11th ASEAN-EU Economic meeting in Phnom Penh, final preparations for commencing negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA). They agreed on the topics to be included in the future trade negotiations and on the framework for the trade negotiations, but issues of democracy and human rights failed to make the agenda.
