Agriculture and water are inextricable linked, and climate change is adding a further complication to relations between the two.  Although everyone agrees on the principles for a long-term vision for water, the issue is how to achieve a more balanced management of water resources in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

LUKoil President Vagit Alekperov and Kazakhstan's national company KazMunayGas CEO Lyazzat Kiinov signed a Memorandum of Understanding which sets the basis for co-operation of Russian companies in studying of geological-geophysical data of free unlicensed onshore and offshore sites in Kazakhstan.

Herman van Rompuy and José Manuel Barroso congratulated Tomislav Nikolić on his election for president of Serbia hours before polling stations were even closed.

Following a well known practice of preparing press releases without any consideration of the content, the press teams of the European Commission and the European Council have issued a statement congratulating the nationalist opposition candidate Tomislav Nikolić on a victory in the presidential elections in Serbia, hours before the ballot stations were even closed.

The premature release was quickly removed from the web, but it caused major turmoil in Serbia online media, giving a boost to the nationalist opposition candidate.

Despite the difficult market conditions Hungary’s Generali-Providencia insurer boosted its after-tax profit by 42% year on year to HUF 4.9 billion (€16.76 million) in 2011, the company announced.

The Generali Group booked a similar improvement.

There are converging estimates that a potential Greece's exit from the Eurozone may cost up to one trillion. A large part of it will be born by this country itself. It will income losses over a number of years, due to an unprecedented recession and uncontrollable inflation.

There will be also huge losses for central countries like France, Germany and Holland due to the exposure of their lenders to the Greek banking system.

Swiss Re, the world’s second largest reinsurer, has reported profits of $1.1 billion (1 billion Swiss Francs) for the first quarter, driven in part by lower-than-expected claims for major natural disasters. The result compares to a loss of $ 655 million for the same period in 2011, Swiss info reported.

Former Ukraine's prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, continued her hunger strike in prison on 8 May as Ukrainian authorities decided to cancel the planned summit. Ukrainian authorities, which are suffering major diplomatic blows prepared to transfer Tymoshenko from prison to a hospital where she should finally receive a treatment for her back pains under supervision of German doctors.

 The French telecom major France Telecom SA (FT) last week posted its first quarter figures reporting a 8.1% drop in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization. In value terms, FT’s earnings came at €3.43 billion, down from €3.73 billion a year earlier.

Our printed twin says, “The Eurozone seems to be preparing for nothing less than a full change of course in its strategy in an effort to counter its sovereign debt crisis...attempting to brake the present vicious cycle of deficits and recession and return to a growth path”
