In Russia, there is a second New Year recognised – the Old New Year (stariy noviy god), which takes place after the regular New Year more universally observed. On that note, Russians joke that Vladimir Putin is the old new Russian President. On 7 May, Putin took back the formal reins of power he ceded to Dmitry Medvedev in 2008, when he faced a bar on a third straight term after eight years as president.

The British security services lived down to their reputation last week, when their secret preparations for the Olympics was interrupted when a journalist, Brian Whelan, discovered that they were going to put up an anti-aircraft missile battery on his roof. So, one takeaway from this is pretty obvious. I told Brian that if he told the authorities he’s let his flat to a group of Iranian exchange students for the games, then the issue should disappear.

Our printed twin says, “The Eurozone seems to be preparing for nothing less than a full change of course in its strategy in an effort to counter its sovereign debt crisis...attempting to brake the present vicious cycle of deficits and recession and return to a growth path”

The reason for this is that the currently applied severe fiscal diet imposed not only to 'sinner' countries like Greece, Portugal. Ireland and Spain, but to surplus member states it is leading to a deepening recession, a prospect that may send the entire world to a new period of negative growth, if not a new round of financial meltdowns.

In return for Brussels’ agreement, BA’s owners, International Consolidated Airlines Group (IAG), must give up 14 pairs of daily take-off and landing slots at Heathrow as a contribution to boost competition in the sector.

IAG must also commit to carry connecting passengers to feed the long-haul flights of competing airlines out of London Heathrow.

Dr Wolfgang Schäuble, the German Federal Minister of Finance last week came up with a completely watered down proposal for the much advertised European tax on financial transactions.

The initial proposal was drafted by the European Commission and followed the broad lines of a 'Tobin tax' principle. It was aired in September 2011 and provided for a levy on all transactions on financial products including bonds and derivatives (0.01%) and stocks (0.1%).
