The much anticipated auction of Italian sovereign debt paper went well today, Monday 14 May.

The bonds were sold to investors at prices/yields above and below levels recorded in similar cases during the past months. The overall results can be termed as a success, given the negative climate that prevails today in European capital markets, after the Greek political political parties didn't manage to find common grounds to form a government in Athens. The deadlock now threatens Eurozone with a new crisis.

The Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti announced that he could take the army against the violent demonstrators, which are recently carrying out riots against the government and its economic policies. On 13 May, Monti raised the level of readiness in key locations in Italy, after another wave of violent protests hit the country.

On May 11, an anarchist group belonging to the so-called "FAI Informal Anarchists Federation's 'Olga Cell', claimed responsibility for the shooting of Italian nuclear company Ansaldo's boss Roberto Adinolfi in the northwestern port city of Genoa earlier this week.
 
The group claim responsibility for attacking Ansaldo Nucleare's CEO -who was shot in the leg by a gunman on a motorbike-  by a letter sent to the Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

The reason for this is that the currently applied severe fiscal diet imposed not only to 'sinner' countries like Greece, Portugal. Ireland and Spain, but to surplus member states it is leading to a deepening recession, a prospect that may send the entire world to a new period of negative growth, if not a new round of financial meltdowns.

The cost reached the levels of a similar auction in January 2012 when the Eurozone was under exceptional pressures in capital markets. At that time the second Greek crisis had reached its apex and Italy and Spain ware suffering from devastating contagion.

Speaking at the European Business Summit in Brussels, Van Rompuy said that "there is no magic formula" for economic recovery. "Reform takes time", he said.

Van Rompuy said that Europe must remain an attractive market, but this could be achieved only by quality growth and in a social and fair environment.

The European Commission presented on 18 April a new employment package which includes a policy communication on job-rich recovery and nine staff working documents. The EC once more openly urges member states to ‘reconsider the need to maintain existing restrictions on free labour market access of Bulgarian and Romanian workers until the end of the transitional period’.
