News stories often require a health warning. In the interests of transparency, the words “this is a rehashed press release” should appear at the beginning of numerous articles in the papers and websites owned by the mainstream media. TV bulletins should open with an announcement, saying “much of what you are about to hear reflects the interests of the powerful”.

The US has placed  new sanctions against Iran and Syria for using technologies to monitor and target citizens in order to exercise violence against them.
 
President Barack Obama announced the new sanctions against those whom he described as "digital guns for hire", in a speech delivered at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.

In a statement posted on an Islamist website on 20 April, Iraq’s al-Qaeda branch has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks that killed 38 across the country on the previous day.
 
Several bombings and shootings in seven different provinces killed 38 people and wounded more than 170.

According to France's Foreign Ministry on 20 April, the European Union will adopt new sanctions against Syria .
 
The new sanctions focus to cut the imports  of luxury goods into Syria such as caviar, truffles, expensive wine, crystals and high fashion goods The new measures include certain raw materials that could be "recycled to be used for repression."

The negotiations have been going on for almost a decade, with long interruptions, and whether a breakthrough will come this time is anyone’s guess. But the situation has never been as serious as it is today, and peace hangs in the balance.
