Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on May 17,during a legal forum ahead of  his participation to the G8 summit at Camp David, warned  Western powers ,stating that a military intervention in the affairs of sovereign states could lead to war, even nuclear war.
 
Russian Prime Minister clearly referred  to his country's position, contrary to the Western powers,on issues such as  Syria  and elsewhere in the Middle East.

The final government line-up is expected to be published early next week, after Medvedev returns from the G8 summit in Washington. The Russian premier will replace the president at the G8 as Putin has explained that he is under urgent pressure to form a new cabinet and therefore cannot attend the summit.

Russian gas monopoly Gazprom's exports to Europe fell 12% in the first four months of 2012. Sales from January to April dropped from 58bn cubic metres last year to 51bn cubic metres this year.

Europe, which relies on Russia for about 25% of its gas, bought less fuel because of warmer-than-usual weather at the start of the year. Moreover, an expected rise in prices at the beginning of last year caused Gazprom customers to stock up ahead of the increase and then switch to other suppliers.

On 14 May, Germany RWE Supply & Trading (RWEST) confirmed it has signed a gas sale and purchase agreement with Ukrainian national joint stock company Naftogaz, the former Soviet republic’ largest energy producer. “I can confirm that we have met the framework agreement. The gas will be sourced from RWEST's pan-European gas portfolio,” RWEST's Sabine Jeschke told New Europe without commenting on any other details like gas volumes “because this will depend on individual contracts”.

On the eve of Vladimir Putin’s inauguration, it appears that the new president will continue to try to draw foreign investment into Russian oil and gas assets. Putin is also likely to find some compromises in EU-Russia energy relations but hold firm on principle positions like his opposition to the so-called Third Energy Package.

Recent reports that Yulia Tymoshenko was assaulted by guards have angered the European Union. Ukraine’s former prime minister and opposition leader has a lot of friends in Brussels and Strasbourg who are increasing pressure on the Ukrainian authorities and President Viktor Yanukovych to end their alleged mistreatment of Tymoshenko and other former government politicians.

Hungary’s MOL said earlier last week it considered further financing of Nabucco unsustainable and had therefore not approved its 2012 budget. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban added that Nabucco was “in trouble”. Instead, Budapest threw its weight behind the Russian-backed rival South Stream pipeline.

Bulgaria has scrapped two of its three Russian-backed energy projects. Plans to build the 2,000MW Belene nuclear power plant on the Danube River were cancelled last week, and the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline was dropped in December. Usually saying ‘no’ to Russian President-elect Vladimir Putin carries a heavy price.

VOULIAGMENI, Greece - The Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) can provide gas to the whole region through other interconnectors, Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) Executive Director Jordan Georgiev told New Europe on 28 March. He said the project aims to be ready to transport gas in 2014. “It can actually be for the whole region. It’s not absolutely linked to Bulgaria,” Georgiev said on the sidelines of an energy conference at a resort near Athens. Bulgaria is 90% dependent on Russian gas.
