CAMBRIDGE – Jim Yong Kim’s appointment as World Bank president may have been predictable, given the long-standing tradition that renders the selection an American prerogative. But even the appearance of competition between Kim and the other candidates, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and José Antonio Ocampo, served to expose a deep fissure within the field of development policy, because Kim and his two rivals represented dramatically different approaches.

Speaking in Baku, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Middle East and Central Asia Department (MCD) Deputy Director Nadeem Ilahi said prospects for the development of Azerbaijan's economy in the short term are generally favourable, news agencies reported.

The Croatian economic institute has revised its previous assessment for 2012 GDP to a negative outlook of -1%.

In the last quarter of 2011, the Croatian economy recorded a year on year GDP  drop of 0.4%, and,  according to the existing indicators, the economy further slowed down in the first quarter of 2012, putting the country into a double-dip recession.

On 2 May, released official figures showed a record high unemployment for the 17  eurozone countries.
Eurozone unemployment rose by 169,000 in March,taking the rate up to 10.9 percent, its highest level since the euro was launched in 1999. 
 
The unemployment rate was up from 10.8%t in February and 9.9% a year ago and reflects the downturn in the eurozone economy as 13 countries  in Europe face double-digit percentage unemployment.

After two days of meetings and bilateral negotiations, politicians and central bankers in the Spring joint conferences of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank concluded that all their efforts to save the Eurozone and the world from the worst will be tested in the market, over the coming weeks and months.

Data from the official statisticians of Latvia recently revealed that the Latvian economy grew by 5.5% in 2011. With a better flow of investments and an overall improvement in the business climate, Latvia’s shortfall was more than halved, shrinking to 3.5% of economic output from 8.2% in 2010, the data showed.

The Eurozone seems to be preparing for nothing less than a full change of course in its strategy in an effort to counter its sovereign debt crisis.

The reason for this is that the currently applied severe fiscal diet imposed not only to 'sinner' countries like Greece, Portugal. Ireland and Spain, but to surplus member states it is leading to a deepening recession, a prospect that may send the entire world to a new period of negative growth, if not a new round of financial meltdowns.

The cost reached the levels of a similar auction in January 2012 when the Eurozone was under exceptional pressures in capital markets. At that time the second Greek crisis had reached its apex and Italy and Spain ware suffering from devastating contagion.

It is not only François Hollande who asks for a new growth chapter in the strategy to counter the Eurozone's problems.

One after the other, major financial organisations and top economists, actively engaged in the efforts to counter the Eurozone's debt crisis, now seem to advocate more growth and centripetal oriented policy proposals to restore growth in Eurozone and not only in Germany.

The European Parliament voted 18 April to approve the Human Rights Report, which calls to establish a new human rights Czar for the EU and 180 human rights specialists at 180 delegations worldwide.

Parliament approved the resolution 580-26. Richard Howitt, a member of Parliament from the UK, wrote the report. He said that by passing the resolution and creating the new position of a human rights czar the EU had made a huge step in the protection of human rights.
