The European Commission proposed a new law in July 2010 as part of a series of fair trial rights to be applied throughout the EU. EU Justice Ministers adopted this law which the European Commission had proposed to ensure defendants' right to information during criminal proceedings. It is the second measure, initiated by EU Justice Commissioner Reding, designed to set common EU minimum standards in criminal cases.

The European Parliament voted on 19 April  a new agreement concerning the transfer of EU air passengers' personal data to the US authorities.
 
The controversial  agreement enables the US Department for Homeland Security  to keep on record sensitive data about people flying from the European Union to the US including their names, credit card details, addresses, phone numbers, meal choices and health information.

Ambassador William E. Kennard said on his twitter account: "I applaud the European Parliament vote in favor of the US-EU Passenger Name Record (PNR) Agreement. [This means that] passenger security and privacy are both protected."

A new agreement on the transfer of EU air passengers' personal data to the US Department of Homeland Security was approved by the Civil Liberties Committee of the European Parliament.

A new agreement on the transfer of EU air passengers' personal data to the US Department of Homeland Security was approved by the Civil Liberties Committee of the European Parliament on 27 March.

The deal sets the legal conditions for the transfer of this data and covers issues such as storage periods, purpose of the data use, data protection safeguards and administrative and judicial redress.
