At a time when it could be compromising for a lady to thoughtlessly blink in church, fans, like gloves, were ‘mobile communication’ accessories, using coded language for secret messages and intricate erotic play: a fan carried in the left hand meant, “Come and talk to me”, when open and shut, “You are cruel”, whereas a fan held wide open sent the unequivocal invitation: “At what hour?”…something of a vintage SMS!

Heavy clashes erupted on 4 May between protesters and security forces ,despite the commitment of military rulers to hand power to the new president by the end of next month.
 
Demonstrators and security forces clashed near Egypt's Defense Ministry in Cairo. Protesters approached the defence ministry building in Cairo and threw rocks at the soldiers, who responded by firing water cannons.

Akhtar Badshah is senior director of global community affairs at Microsoft, spoke to New Europe about their global initiative to assist young people to start businesses that benefit society. The software giant is holding a series of events, starting in their Redmond HQ, but continuing in Cairo, Singapore, Brussels and so on.

Egypt's military rulers on 3 may, vowed that this month's presidential election will be fair committed to handing over power to a civilian administration on 1 July.

 

The announcement came a day after deadly clashes that left 11 people died, in an attack on an anti-military protest outside the defence ministry in Cairo.

On 2 May, clashes erupted between suspected supporters of Egypt's military rulers and Islamist protesters gathered outside the Defense Ministry in the Egyptian capital.
 
Thousands of demonstrators demanded an end to military rule after their candidate was barred from this month's presidential election.

Visiting Turkey's Deputy Undersecretary of State in charge of Foreign Trade, Ugul Ecevit met with Mahmoud Eissa, Egypt's Minister of Industry and Foreign Trade in Cairo. After the meeting, Eissa citing Egypt's State Information Service said that Turkish firms are ready to invest over $1bn into projects in Egypt during the next few years, Zaman reported. To entice further investments from Turkey, Eissa mentioned the importance of a quick launch of the planned shipping trade route between the port of Alexandria and the Turkish city of Mersin.
