No American forces in Iraqi cities by mid-2009, no American forces in Iraq by 2011
“We want to have our full sovereignty. We want to achieve our full independence. We would hope for multinational forces to leave as soon as possible,” the Chairman of the Security and Defense Committee of the Iraqi Parliament, Hadi al Ameri told New Europe’s Editor Alexandros Koronakis in an interview in Brussels. Answering a question about when Iraq could be expected to fully handle the security situation on their own, al Ameri answered: “I think that today Iraqi forces are handling the security issue. Since the beginning of 2008, it’s the Iraqi forces that lead the actions, and American forces have a secondary role. If we can equip our forces with the arms they need, we can handle the security. We do not wish multinational forces to stay in Iraq forever. We want to have our full sovereignty. We want to achieve our full independence. We would hope for multinational forces to leave as soon as possible. We are committed to build our forces very quickly, and even in our negotiations with the USA regarding the security conventions, we insisted on the necessity of American forces to withdraw from all Iraqi cities by mid-2009. American forces have only 8 months left in order to leave cities and stay in military camps. American forces have to withdraw completely from Iraq by 2011.”
