The Japanese carmaker Mitsubishi has announced its plans to expand production capacity in Portugal. The Mitsubishi Fuso Truck Europe assembling trucks at Tramagal (north of Lisbon), is negotiating to expand its Canter assembly operation, to double or treble its current 10,000-vehicle a year output, Chairman of the company Jorge Rosa said last week.
The investment will involve upgrading existing equipment and plant and could boost production by as much as 30,000 vehicles enabling the company to sell into new markets. It currently exports 90 percent of output to 28 European countries and is the only Japanese plant assembling Canter trucks in Europe. Mitsubishi invested 30 million Euro in 2005 to adapt the plant for current Canter model assembly.
