Why the Euro Corridors Matter: The Case of the South Moravia
3 October 2009 - Issue : 854
The South Moravian Region (1,130,000 inhabitants) lies in the southeast of the Czech Republic on the borders with Austria and Slovakia. The region is home to the Czech Republic’s second largest city Brno, an important judiciary city, a university town with 80.000 students and the Central European trade fair centre with a long tradition in the organisation of trade fairs, which attract more than a million people from all over the world each year. The region has also among the connoisseurs the image of wine region. And expectantly the South Moravia with its capital Brno will soon become the dominant of the European railway cargo map as it should be according to the plans of the Europoint transport node and hand in hand with TEN-T project No. 23 connecting Baltic and Adriatic see ports.
The Baltic-Adriatic Corridor (BAC) is the European railway cargo project of the certain regions of Poland, Slovakia, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic and of course namely of the South Moravia with its capital Brno. The memorandum of the regions participating in the BAC project supporting the consequent and immediate realization of the BAC is planned to be signed 6. 10. 2009 in Brussels. The BAC will bring the new opportunities for Brno, South Moravia and Europe. In general it aims to combat the climate change through strengthening of the railway transportation and from the economic point of view there are no doubts that Europe needs new multimodal corridor and those regions that will be passed through, will soon achieve advantage in the economic competition. The South Moravia is among those regions having this chance.
Brno prepares the reconstruction of its transport node, the Europoint, not only for the realization of the BAC but also to earn the transport advantage for the South Moravia and Europe as such. With the realization of the BAC and the Europoint, Brno has the chance to become the centre on the European railway map with many positive outcomes regarding to this. The planning of building the transport node Europoint Brno has been taken long time over the past, which does not however detract its actuality. The opposite is the truth.
The Europoint Brno as a new impulse for the South Moravian railway transportation has been considered since the 1924. It has been appeared in the all possible plans and analysis regarding the Brno’s transport system. It should be also mentioned, that these plans have not taken the original analysis as taken for granted stand point, but they have analysed it again and again independently with the same conclusion: The Europoint is necessary for further development of the region and the Czech Republic. As such it is a part of broader governmental programme of modernisation of important transport nodes and stations that are the parts of transit corridors. The project is among the Czech investment priorities for development of railways in the Czech Republic. The Brno’s railway node is the second biggest in the Czech Republic and the creation of the Europoint followed by the BAC will even strengthen its importance.
It is also important to mention that the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor with its transport node Europoint Brno have broad political support from the most of the political parties. It is basically not about policy, it is about doing the right decision, the right step for Brno, for South Moravia and last, but not least for Europe.
The future in the Europe belongs to those cities in those regions which will success in the competition with the others. Brno has an outstanding opportunity to use the planned reconstruction of the transport node and the realization of the European corridors for improving the mobility of the people and cargo, for utilisation of its potential, for development of the region, for deepening the trans-regional cooperation and thus for strengthening the whole Europe. And that is the fact realized by the all BAC participant regions.
