The economic, agricultural, environmental and regional policy committee of Saeima on 22 September put its weight behind a suggestion to alter the alcohol curfew regulations and prolong the sale of alcoholic beverages until 23h in Latvia. However, Saeima was to review the bill in the second reading. The Latvian Liquor Producers and Sellers Association previously turned to Saeima committees, groups and ministries, asking to ensure that the same rules apply to all alcoholic beverages, including beer after a suggestion was made to alter the alcohol curfew regulations for beer only. The association also informed that the rules on contraband alcohol must be tightened adding that revenue from the excise tax on alcoholic beverages this past August was 877,000 lats or 10.5 per cent smaller than in August 2008 due to the expanding bootleg alcohol market.
