Mladenov Minister of Foreign Affairs; Jeleva still EPP Vice President
Bulgaria's Defence Minister Nikolay Mladenov will to replace Rumiania Jeleva as foreign minister, despite Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov having requested that she stay on as Foreign Minister on Tuesday 19 January. Jeleva resigned from all both political posts of European Commissioner-designate, and minister of Foreign Affairs this week. (See letter of resignation here)
Mladenov's deputy, reserve general Anyu Angelov would take over as Defense Minister, the state radio said.
Rumiana Jeleva, who was in the spotlight last week and reportedly in the hospital after a “political assassination” attempt in the European Parliament, stated that there was no pressure put on her to resign her post as EU Commissioner-Designate or from the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
Jeleva remains the Vice-President of the European People’s Party, but it is unknown whether she will retain her seat, and to what extent she will continue to be involved in politics.
