Minister says Turkey wants only full EU membership
Turkey’s new foreign minister has ruled out Turkey accepting anything but full membership of the European Union, Turkish newspapers reported. “We will either become a full member of the EU or not become a member at all,” newspapers quoted Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutogluas saying in Stockholm, referring to mooted moves by Germany and France to offer Turkey some sort of deal that falls short of full membership of the European Union. Davutoglu also urged EU members not to use Turkey’s membership bid as a domestic political issue and said that Turkey treated its bid as a strategic priority. The Turkish foreign minister was in Stockholm for talks with his Swedish counterpart Carl Bildtand EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn. French President Nicolas Sarkozy said he opposes full membership for Turkey because it’s not in Europe, while German Chancellor Angela Merkelhas said she also favors a privileged partnership instead of membership.
