Half-power from renewable energy
The key target of the energy efficiency programme run by the Portuguese government is to secure that 45 percent of the power is to be produced from renewable energy sources. With this in mind, the government invested in the building of wind and solar farms, as well as dams for hydroelectric power. The Portuguese Minister of Economy Manuel Pinho said the government expects the proportion of renewable energy in Portugal to rise to around 55 percent by 2020.
