FDI down 80% to USD 226 mln
Georgia on September 16 reported an 80.0 percent drop in foreign direct investment in the first half of 2009 compared with the same period last year, Reuters reported. Total FDI in January-June 2009 was USD 226.1 million, the statistics office said, compared with USD 1.11 billion in the same period of 2008. The transport and communications sector suffered most from the economic crisis, seeing an outflow of USD 37.3 million in the first half compared with inflows of USD 318.4 million a year ago. The real estate sector saw investment of USD 81.4 million, power sector USD 21.8 million, the banking sector USD 9.1 million, the industrial sector USD 13.6 million, construction USD 8.1 million and agriculture USD 3.2 million. |
