Electrabel to go nuclear
Belgian utility Electrabel, owned by France’s Suez, is among the two favorite contestants to win the bid for 49 percent of the new Bulgarian Nuclear Plant – Belene. Alongside it is the German RWE. Bulgaria has also received offers from Italy’s Enel, Germany’s E.ON and Czech company CEZ. The final decision about the short-list should be made by Bulgarian authorities until end of this month. The renewal of construction work of this nuclear plant of 2000 MW comes as an indirect result of the EU decision to shut down the Kozlodui power plant. If the project is successful it will place Bulgaria among the major electricity exporters in the Balkans, a position it had lost after being forced to shut the communist-era reactors.
