E.ON to sell power plants to Verbund
German energy giant E.ON AG agreed to sell 13 power plants to Austrian provider Verbund, both companies announced on June 8. The companies did not release a sales price for the hydroelectric plants with a combined capacity of 312 megawatts, located in the German state of Bavaria, Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) reported. The deal was part of E.ON’s commitment to the European Commission, made in May 2008, to sell some 5,000 megawatts of generating capacity as well as its ultrahigh-voltage power lines in Germany. Including the sale to Verbund, E.ON said it has concluded agreements equivalent to shedding 3,200 megawatts so far. E.ON has announced to swap power plants with Belgium’s Electrabel and has transferred stakes in plants to German utility EnBW Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg AG. Verbund said the closing of the transaction was scheduled for the third quarter of 2009, pending approval of the European Commission.
