European Parliament President
Jerzy Buzek met on 5 November with Estonian President
Toomas Hendrik-Ilves/549.php">Toomas Hendrik Ilves to discuss the Eastern partnership, energy supply security, environment, and relations with Russia.
We are talking about the most important issues for our citizens, like energy security supply, diversification, new energy resources, necessity of keeping environmental assessment on Nord Stream... and also about the Eastern partnership, relations with Russia... We need such a relations but also we should remind every time about human rights and the status of democracy, Buzek said.
For his part, Ilves said how happy he is about being back to the EP, where he was working for three years. I have been vice-president of the FFAA Committee and one of the things I am most proud of is that I have initiated the Baltic Sea Strategy Paper, he said. I think it is vital that leaders of the European member states consult ever more with the parliament in this new situation where we will be working out what will be the relationship between the Parliament and the member states and the Commission.
Asked if he would accept being the President of the Council if he was asked to do so, Ilves said If called to serve I cannot as an European say no, but I think now it is far too early to say anything other than that… I really do not have expectations.
