Poland unworried by Russian help for US missile shield
Poland sees no problems with Russia potentially cooperating with the United States on a missile shield on Polish soil, the country’s foreign minister said. “We don’t see anything bad in this,” Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorki told the daily Wyborcza. Poland originally agreed to host the shield in exchange for US military aid. But the deal drew ire from Moscow, which said the system was aimed at Russia despite US assurances that it is for protection against “rogue states” like Iran. But US Defence Minister Robert Gates has recently said his country could work with Russia on the missile shield and locate some system elements on Russian soil. Russia has not yet responded to the offer. “We expected from the start that the US would convince the Russian side that the installation isn’t aimed against Russia. It’s better to have the shield and an American presence in Poland that doesn’t bring Russia’s objections.” Former US President George Bush sealed the missile shield deal with Poland and the Czech Republic, but US President Barack Obama is more hesitant to start building. Obama has said missile defence should be shown to work before construction starts. |
