Mauro has his eyes on the European Parliament’s top prize

Interview with: Mario Mauro, Vice President of the European Parliament
3 May 2009 - Issue : 832

Mario Mauro from Italy, a Vice President of the European Parliament and a contender to become President in the next Parliamentary term, stopped by the New Europe NETV booth at the European People’s Party convention in Warsaw, Poland last week to talk about the party’s role in Europe and trying to sustain its large majority in the parliament.

Can you please tell us what do you think some of the issues are that you will bring to bear both in your party and in your position?

-First of all, we are very happy to be here, in Warsaw, because we are here for an historic reason. We are here for the reconciliation of Europe. We renew in this moment that the sufferance, the troubles of this country for a lot of times are the opportunity to consider our job in Europe, a job in favor of destiny of generation. We created in all these years the conditions for a new vision of Europe I think and exactly now with this Congress we realize part of our promises. And, I think another very important issue is that we had the hope for the new generation. European’s People’s Party has not all the capacity to indicate the problems, but to find the solutions.

How do you get young people involved in that process too? Obama saw that if you engaged them you really galvanise almost an electric atmosphere. Can the EPP do the same?

Yes, but with higher values, with higher manner to read the situation, to understand the problem, so the people..For this reason, in Italy, we created a new Party, People of Freedom, Popolo del Liberta. With the contributions of our leader, Mr. Berlusconi, we created this Party that is the possibility for our country to have more stability, because in a lot of countries, normally, the left is the party that created the government with a level of ideological point of view. But, normally, the right created parties in which personalismes are source of a lot of problems. In this manner, with this new party, we obtain the possibility to give to our country more stability and to give to our Europe the Europe in which is possible to renew our vision more opportunities.

To what do you attribute the strong and quick success of the Party?

Because probably in this moment we realise in our country a former government in which people may see a short of real preoccupation for the troubles and the destiny of the people.

We will see what’s coming up with the European elections in a couple of months.

The EPP as the dominant party and it stands to stay that way too.
