EU University-Business Forum to become annual
Presenting a set of measures to support dialogue between universities and business, the Commission has taken further steps in order to facilitate the modernisation of the Member States’ higher education systems on April 2. The Commission’s proposal to make the University-Business Forum a Europe-wide platform for dialogue involves higher education institutions, companies, business associations, intermediaries and public authorities with an aim to stimulate all the stakeholders to exchange good practice, to discuss and find solutions together. "Closer co-operation between universities and business is a cornerstone of higher education reforms. Progress in this field is absolutely necessary. The EU Forum for University-Business Dialogue provides very concrete support to the universities and companies by encouraging them to learn from each other and by inspiring reforms on national, regional and institutional levels" stressed Jan Figel', the European Commissioner in charge of Education, Training, Culture and Youth.
Despite the bright examples of cooperation between educational institutions and business, there are considerable differences in the level of cooperation across countries, universities and academic disciplines. The influence of the cooperation initiatives on the governance and organisational culture of participating organisations remains so far limited. The Commission therefore emphasises the necessity to continue and further develop the dialogue giving it a reinforced structure with meetings hold on regular basis. It will work to strengthen the involvement of national and regional authorities, later opening the door even for actors from outside the EU.
“University-business cooperation is not something which we should switch on in good times and switch at difficult economic moments like the present. It is too important, too important in particular as a means to ensuring that the next phase of Europe's economic growth can be built on a more secure foundation, the knowledge, high skills, ideas and creativity of Europeans, ” re-iterated Odile Quintin, Director General, Directorate General Education and Culture when concluding the University-Business Forum 2009.
The University-Business Forum project was launched by the Commission in 2008 as a platform for dialogue between two worlds. Pursuing a modernization path, The Forum includes different indicatives covering the whole process of education, training, getting and keeping the job.
