Turkish Airlines to pay compensation for plane crash
Turkish Airlines on March 3 announced that it was prepared to immediately pay compensation to the families of those killed and all surviving passengers on board flight TK 1951 which crashed while approaching Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport two weeks ago. "Turkish Airlines would once more like to express its endless grief and sorrow and sincere condolences for the relatives of the deceased passengers and crew, and prays for the urgent recovery of the injured passengers in relation to the Boeing 737-800 Aircraft accident," the company said in a statement released on March 3. The statement said the initial payments that are available immediately would be 50,000 Euro for the families of those killed in the crash. Payments of 10,000 Euro were set for those who were hospitalised for more than three days and 5,000 Euro to all other surviving passengers. The payments shall not constitute a recognition of liability and "shall be offset against any amounts subsequently payable as damages by the carrier," the statement said. Of the 134 people on board flight TK 1951, nine people were killed 86 injured in the February 25 crash. There have been conflicting reports as to the cause of the crash with the two most likely causes being either wake turbulence or pilot error.
