Polish megastore legislation brings IKEA to Romania
The new law on large commercial centres seems to have undermined IKEA’s plans to enter the Polish market. But since some 1.6 billion Euro have already been allocated for new investments, the Swedish retailer decided to redirect money to the Balkans by increasing investments in Romania and Bulgaria, media reported on April 30. IKEA planned to open two stores in Poland, one in Lodz, worth 200 million Euro, which would create 2,000 jobs and one in Poznan, worth 100 million Euro, with 1,000 jobs. Currently, both business projects have been suspended. According to IKEA managers, if there are no changes in the law, the money will go to Romania, where IKEA currently owns only one store.
