Spanair pulls down shutters due to crash

Spanair finally failed to survive the crash. The carrier which went deep in trouble since 2008 after a crash killed 154 people, on 27 January landed its last commercial flight, local reports revealed.

The decision of winding up came after the regional government of north-eastern Catalonia decided to stop pumping in funds to make the fourth largest Spanish carrier survive. The government had been financing the carrier which went into the hands of tourism group Consorci de Turisme de Barcelona and Catalana d'Iniciatives, a private equity group in 2008 after its owner SAS Scandinavian Airlines System International sold it out following the crash which is regarded as Spain's worst aviation disaster in 25 years.

In a statement announcing the closure the government said the "current economic climate" and "European legislation concerning competition" made it impossible for it to continue financing the small carrier, whose hub was Barcelona airport. Spain's Development Ministry also published a statement requiring Spanair to "fulfil its obligations with passengers."
