EEAS: New appointments to prominent positions

Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President of the Commission, announced today a number of new appointments in prominent positions of the European External Action Service (EEAS).

Catherine Ashton stated: "I am delighted to appoint such excellent candidates to some of the key positions in the European External Action Service. Their talent and expertise represent significant assets for the EU's external action and I look forward to working with them in their new roles".

In specific, Roland Schäfer, Deputy German Ambassador to Israel and former Political Counsellor in the German Permanent Representation to the EU, has been appointed Director for the Americas. Joelle Jenny, Head of Division in the EEAS for Conflict Prevention, Peace-building and Mediation,is the new Director for Conflict Prevention and Security Policy. Bjorn Larsson, Head of Unit in the Human Resources Directorate of the Council Secretariat,is taking over the Director for Human Resources position. Stephan Auer, Director for Globalisation, Energy and Climate Policy in the German Foreign Office,is the new Director for Multilateral Relations and Global Issues. Peteris Ustubs, Deputy Head of the Cabinet of European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs and former Latvian ambassador to the Political and Security Committee has been appointed Director for West and Central Africa and Sahel Coordinator. And finally, Jacek Bylica, Head of the WMD Non-proliferation Centre at NATO, is the newly appointed Principal Adviser and Special Envoy for Non-proliferation and Disarmament.

In addition, the High Representative announced her plans to appoint Andrew Jacobs (currently Head of Unit for Southern Neighbourhood in the European Commission) Head of the Fiji Delegation, Matthias Brinkmann (currently Head of the EU Delegation in Canada) Head of the Iceland Delegation. Rupert Joy (former UK Ambassador to Uzbekistan) Head of Morocco Delegation and finally, Juan Fernandez Trigo (currently Spanish Ambassador to Paraguay) Head of Uruguay Delegation.

The EEAS’ role is to assist the High Representative in the Union's external action as well as to draft policy proposals and implement them after their approval by the Council. It also ensures close cooperation with the Member States.
