Albanian Foreign Minister visits Australia
Visiting Foreign Minister of the Republic of Albania, His Excellency Professor Edmond Panariti was recently welcomed by Australia foreign minister Bob Carr. This is the first visit of Panariti to the region as Foreign Minister and the first to Australia by a member of the Albanian Government, AENews reported.
The visit followed after Parliamentary Secretary Richard Marles MP's visit to Albania in April. During the talks, Carr said that the rising high-level engagement between Australia and Albania reflects the growing bilateral relationship and cooperation in NATO and the Organisation for Cooperation and Security in Europe.
The Senator said that Australia and Albania are both longstanding and reliable contributors to international efforts in Afghanistan. He praised Albania on its constructive role as Chair of the Council of Europe during 2012 and on the achievement of the institutional reforms it has achieved, which is in accordance with its bid for EU candidacy.
The rich contribution of the Australian-Albanian community comprising of high-level sportsmen, businessmen, authors, artists and legal professionals, was also praised by Carr. In Canberra, Professor Panariti met with Australian Government Ministers and parliamentarians, including the Australian-Albanian Parliamentary Group. He also had talks with the Albanian community in Melbourne.
